  • The launch of the first Polish open large language model: PLLuM

The collaborative efforts of six leading scientific units with expertise in AI, NLP and corpus linguistics are underway to develop the Polish Large Language Model (PLLuM) and an associated smart assistant, both of which are trained predominantly on Polish text. On 29 November, 2023, six leading institutions in Poland that operate in AI and linguistics – Wrocław University of Science and Technology (the consortium leader), the National Information Processing Institute (OPI), the NASK National Research Institute, the Institute of Computer Science PAS (IPI PAN), the University of Lodz, and the Institute of Slavic Studies PAS – joined forces to establish the PLLuM consortium.

  • New classification methods for data with incomplete observability

The IPI PAN's Statistical Analysis and Modeling Group achieved significant results regarding two new machine learning methods for positive-unlabeld data in an important case when their availability depends on the characteristics of the examined entities. The first proposed method examined a new parametric model for generating this type of data and an iterative procedure for estimating its parameters. The second method is based on the concept of variational autoencoders combined with outlier detection techniques. In addition to the theoretical justification of the methods, a significantly better quality of the resulting classifiers for tabular and image data was experimentally demonstrated.

  • Five IPI PAN Scientists in World’s TOP 2% Scientists 2023 by Stanford University

Once again, scientists from the IPI PAN have been ranked among the most influential 2% of researchers in the world, according to the adopted citation indexes of their publications. This is the fourth edition of the study, based on an article published in the journal PLOS Biology by authors from Stanford University, Elsevier and SciTech Strategies, which presents a publicly available database that provides standardised information taking into account publication output. Congratulations! The distinguished ones from IPI PAN include: Marta Kwiatkowska, Stan Matwin, Zbigniew Michalewicz, Wojciech Penczek oraz Józef Pieprzyk.
