PORTOS Operating System Specification
910
Abstract
This paper contains a partial specification of the PORTOS (Portable Operating System) project. PORTOS has been developed to support courses of Operating Systems Theory and Programming Languages at Faculty Of Mathematics at Lodz University. Main features of PORTOS are binary-portable applications, executing with specialized virtual machines, multiaccess, multitasking, network scalability and distributed processing support. PORTOS is a good example of a computer system created with use of object-oriented technology and event-driven programming. Multilayered construction of project and well defined, non-redundant interfaces cause the system is easy to develop in student groups.
Key words: operating systems, distributed systems, network systems, portable applications, virtual machines, processor emulators, multitasking, object-oriented languages.
