Anaphor binding
in Polish: an attempt at an HPSG account
836
Abstract
This paper is an attempt to adopt for Polish the concept of
obliqueness-based binding theory as used in HPSG (Head-driven Phrase
Structure Grammar). More precisely, we try to follow the `existential'
modification of the theory. This solution seems quite promising as it allows us
to account
for the problematic medium-distance binding in the case of control verbs.
This approach, however, has serious deficiencies as it fails to capture a
wide range of Polish data that should be licensed by the binding theory. We
present arguments which question suitability of this existential approach
for Polish.
