Abstract

In this study the overview of current image compression standards including: JPEG, H.261, T.120, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 is presented. The main goal of the study is to describe these standards including the following subparts: algorithms, applications and parameters, implementation and testing, and research areas. Next the example of application using various image compression standards is given. The final section presents the conclusions arising the analysis and comparison of digital image compression standards. The list of planned image compression standards and the list of standardization organisations are also included.
