Wavelet Compression of Digital Images
803
Abstract
The report presents the hierarchical wavelet decomposition of 2D signals
representing digital images and its applications to image compression. Wavelet
compression enables to get very high compression ratio at acceptable level of image
distortions and processing time. This work is a kind of survey including
fundamental algorithm of Mallat which implements wavelet decomposition in
terms of multiresolution analysis using orthonormal bases. It also includes later
results on biorthogonal filters designed independently by Daubechies and Vetterli.
Descriptions of wavelet based coders for images are given and their properties are
discussed.
